Day 5: Kenrokuen Garden & Kanazawa Castle

(Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone back at home!☘️)

We met in the hotel lobby at 8 AM and started the day with a lovely Japanese breakfast (wearing my green St Patrick’s socks for the occasion!):

My favorite dish? A comforting bowl of steamed rice topped with rich, flavorful curry—a perfect way to fuel up for the day ahead. Another standout was the matcha brownie, a  delightful blend of earthy green tea and sweet chocolate.

After breakfast, we hopped on a local bus to Kenrokuen Garden, often considered one of Japan’s most breathtaking gardens. It was a perfect spring day, and as we strolled through the beautiful landscapes, every turn revealed peaceful ponds, delicate cherry blossoms beginning to bloom, and perfectly placed stone lanterns. The garden’s design—carefully planned with harmony, balance, and intention—made me appreciate even more the elegance and sophistication of Japanese culture.

Right across the street, we stepped back in time at Kanazawa Castle, which played a significant role in Japan’s history during the 1400s. We were lucky enough to join a free English tour, led by a gracious and knowledgeable Japanese woman who generously shared her time and insights with us. Learning about the castle’s strategic importance, its stunning white-walled architecture, and its reconstruction efforts made me appreciate just how much history is woven into every corner of Kanazawa.

On our way back to the hotel, we made a delicious stop at Omicho Market, known for its fresh, high-quality seafood. We couldn’t resist indulging in some of Kanazawa’s famous sushi, featuring locally sourced fish that tasted as if had just been caught.

The afternoon was a mix of rest and adventure—everyone took some time to unwind, while I headed to the hotel’s exercise room to squeeze in a 9-mile run! In the evening, we gathered once again for a relaxing happy hour before heading out for one last incredible meal. Dinner featured a comforting bowl of Wagyu beef and rice, and Nancy and I also shared a bowl of rich, meaty ramen that was absolutely out of this world.

Back in our room, we packed our bags and prepared for an early departure Wednesday morning, feeling grateful for yet another incredible day in Japan.
